STAR TOURING AND RIDING ASSOCIATION
CHAPTER 224 – EL CAJON, CA

February 2012 Meeting Minutes & Ride Report

This was the first month of the new year where we actually got to ride somewhere.  Chapter attendance was above 60% of active membership for this month, and David got us started right on time.  Upcoming events were reviewed, the first of which is the SW SBQ in Tucson next month.  There will be a group leaving the Motoworld parking lot on Thursday, David will confirm the departure time. To all members next month.  Rich Woodward is looking to share accommodations if anyone is interested, contact David by email if you’d like to keep cost low.  See the STAR web site for complete information.

Star Days was also discussed, and as it is in Reno this year, several members will be going.  Complete information and registration information is available on the STAR web site.

The members present agreed that the March Ride will be Chapter 224’s participation in the annual Skills Day hosted by Chapter 109.  Dave provided all members with the email information previously, and we’re thinking about meeting for Breakfast in Temecula.  Exact time and place to be determined, but we need to be at the location by 9:00AM.  That will mean an early start, but it will be well worth it.

Kimberly Riley has joined Star, and has been unanimously accepted as the newest member of Chapter 224.  In celebration of this event, she brought her daughter Cameron along for her inaugural ride as a chapter member.

Chapter funds at the end of February total $40.  Since we didn’t have a chance to ride anywhere in January due to weather, we used this ride to fund the lunch in Borrego Springs.

Ah, the ride…  It was a picture perfect Southern California winter day.  Clear skis, crisp clean air, snow in the mountains, and just warm enough not to be a problem.  Six bikes and eight riders made the trip from Motoworld to Borrego Springs.  The route took us through Ramona with a brief stop in Santa Ysabel.  From there we headed towards Warner Springs and turned off on S2.  Instead of taking the turn to Ranchita, we continued on S2 until we reached Scissors Crossing.  From there we headed into Borrego Springs for lunch at Pablito’s.  We were seated inside, and it was funny to notice that everyone else that came in after us were “asked” if they’d like to be seated on the patio.  We’re really not biker trash, honest we’re not!  Good Mexican food was enjoyed by all, and after lunch the ride was officially called complete.

CHAPTER 224 – EL CAJON, CA

2012 marks the 10th Anniversary year for Chapter 224, and plans are to make it a great one.  With the election of Chapter officers completed last month, our 2012 President David Whitehead was looking to fill in the slots for the remainder of the Executive Board.  Here is the complete list of Chapter Officers for 2012.

President:  David Whitehead, serving a second term for Chapter 224
Vice President: Terry Snow, serving his third term in this position
Sgt. At Arms: Ken Moen, who has served as past president of Chapter 224
Secretary: John Neidert, who’s held just about every position except LOS Rep the last 8 years
Treasurer: Kathy Carpenter, first time officer, and she volunteered!
Star Vets Rep: Guy Anastasia continues in this position.  Guy works to help disabled Vets in San Diego
LOS Rep: Debra Melanson, also continuing in this position for several years
Tin Star: Kathy Moen, Tin Star Rep for the past 10 years and we wouldn’t have it any other way

Congratulations are in order for Kathy Carpenter.  She obtained her MC endorsement and is the proud owner of the VStar 650 that started life in Chapter 224 as my first bike.  It’s spent the 7+ years in the possession of Donna Hughes, where it underwent a transformation from stock black Custom model to the white Celtic themed bike it is today.  Kathy has been part of the chapter for a few years, but as a passenger with Jeff.  Now she’ll be riding her own.

We had a guest join us for this meeting.  Kimberly Riley (friend of Dave and Debra) joined us for breakfast and the meeting at Motoworld.  Sad to say, but she is the only one that rode a bike in the rain.  The rest of us were in 4 wheeled vehicles.  Looking forward to Kim’s continued participation and future joining of the Chapter.

Other business discussed included:

David will talk to Glenn and Sean at Motoworld to see what can be done to add the chapter web site to the various Chapter banners located throughout Motoworld.  This will hopefully get more traffic to the site and potential members to the chapter.

John N. will make sure the stock of Chapter and Star Application Brochures are in stock on the counter by the cash registers.  There are currently Chapter brochures at this location, and Star applications will be made available next meeting.

Chapter funds heading into 2012 total $132.  The checking account at the Credit Union was closed at the end of 2011.  For some unexplained reason, John took the cash box with him even though he’s not Treasurer.  Old habits die hard I guess.  I’ll turn it over to Kathy next month.

David mentioned that he will be posting information related to riding opportunities on non-Chapter weekends for anyone interested in participating.  He’ll investigate how to properly handle these types of rides and how they may impact a members status.

Due to the rainy weather, there was no Chapter ride for the month of January.  A total of 13 people were available for the meeting, with 12 signing the new Charter documents.

STAR TOURING AND RIDING ASSOCIATION
CHAPTER 224 – EL CAJON, CA

Well it looks like the 2012 year is off to GREAT start! We had a fairly good turnout for what was to be the first un-official ride of the year. Although several of the members showed up for the breakfast at the Kountry Kafe in Poway, they were actually riding with the San Diego chapter of the Retreads but it was sort of one big group just the same. Members included Guy, John, Gary, Kurt, Darryl and Chis, Terry, Kathy and our guest Kimberly. It was a COLD ride up there from Mira Mesa where Deb and I initially started but I’m pretty sure Kimberly had the coldest ride coming from Pine Valley. We’re all really happy that she decided to brave the weather and come out.

Of course there were no real “official business” discussions so those of you that could not make the ride really didn’t miss anything other than the ride its self. We all pretty much just chatted, laughed and enjoyed a great breakfast before hopping on the bikes to head up into the hill.

We wrapped up breakfast and started saddling up at around 9:00 AM after a few pictures. We decided to break into two groups, one being the Retreads and the other being the 224 group. We headed out of Poway on Poway Rd, taking Highway 67 up into Ramona. Kathy was waiting for the group by the side of the road as we entered town and joined up behind us. We continued on to Santa Isabel for a short break at Dudley’s Bakery and a restroom break. From there we turned north onto Highway 79 continuing on to S-2 towards Shelter Valley. We made a right turn back onto Highway 78 north of Julian. Snaked our way down through the canyon to pickup Yaqui Pass Road that took us into the south side of Borrego Springs.

We stopped for lunch at a little Mexican restaurant on the north side of town (the name of which always seems to escape me), good food and a nice atmosphere. While we were seated we noticed another group ride in, all wearing the STAR cut. Bets were placed as to which chapter it was and sure enough it was San Diego Chapter 123 out of North County Yamaha. We had a nice visit with several of the chapter members and President before our food was served. Turns out that January is their annual Borrego Springs ride.

We wrapped up lunch, got a few more pictures and then unanimously decided to just go ahead on ride on out to the boat ramp at Salton Sea just because it was there. It turned out to be a good thing that we did as we discovered that one of Deb and I’s favorite places to eat is once again open for business. Johnson’s Landing is back in full swing again and judging by the crowed they’re serving great food yet again. Kathy and I exchanged contact information with Lori (the owner) before getting back on the bikes for the ride home. We all stopped to fill up at the Arco at the intersection of Borrego, Slaton Sea Way and Highway 86 where Terry, Guy and Kimberly decided to break off and head home by way of Montezuma Road out of Borrego Springs. Debra, Kathy, Darryl, Chris and I pretty much back-tracked from there where Darryl and Chris broke off to take the 76 to Oceanside. Kathy broke of and headed home in Ramona and Debra and I took the 67 on down to Scripps Poway Parkway on down into Mira Mesa and home. For Debra and I, it was an excellent 240 mile round trip and a GOOD break from the routine!

We DO hope that everyone enjoyed the ride as much as we did and we really do hope to see Kimberly again for the Official Chapter Ride this month.

Ride SAFE everyone!

November 2011 Ride Report

The November chapter ride started off with a breakfast meeting at the Highway 67 Café in Lakeside. We had seven members in attendance including the elusive Richard Woodward who hasn’t been able to make a meeting in quite some time due to his work hours. Everyone was glad to see he could make it this time.

The meeting at Motoworld kicked off right on time at 9:00 AM. Several more members showed to make a fairly good attendance. As of the start of the meeting the nominations for chapter offices were officially closed. Voting will take place in December and the results will be officially announced shortly thereafter.

The December meeting has been moved up to the SECOND Saturday of the month and will be held at the Denny’s just off Interstate 5 on the Ortega Highway at 8:00 AM. This is to accommodate the ride destination, which will be the Long Beach Bike Show.  Departure from the Denny’s will be at 9:30AM sharp, so plan accordingly. Please be sure and watch your e-mail for any additional details. You may also view details at the chapter web site’s calendar.

This month’s ride destination was originally intended to be Palm Springs to take the tram ride up to the summit of Mt. San Jacinto however upon receiving the weather report (LOTS of rain) from Ken and Kathy Moen who had just come down Highway 67 from Ramona it was decided to change the destination. Five bikes made up the small group that headed out from Motoworld to take a ride on Highway 94. Traffic was a little slow at first but once the group passed the Tecate turn-out it was smoothing sailing to the Chevron station at Cameron Corner. By that point the temperatures had dropped quite bit (as was expected) so the group turned North on Buckman Springs Rd. and then headed west on old Highway through Pine Valley, Guatay and Descanso.  We picked Japitual Valley and Dehesa Roads on our way back to El Cajon where pretty much everyone parted ways and headed on home. A somewhat short but much needed ride.

September 2011 Ride Report

It was a beautiful day for a chapter ride! Not to cold, not to hot… and there was a lot of activity at Motoworld! The Yamaha truck was onsite for the weekend offering demo-rides to anyone interested in checking the new line of STAR motorcycles. They had a really good lineup of motorcycles and plenty of folks checking them out. Several of the chapter members signed up for the first test ride group of the day.

The meeting was held in the parking lot at Motoworld and was kept somewhat brief in order to make time for the demo rides.

The nominations for the 2012 Chapter Officers are officially open and members wishing to run for officer roles should get their names into the president John Neidert as soon as possible.

Our Western Regional Directors Bob and Anna Barbano are looking for input from all Southwest members on how we might spice up the annual Southwest STAR-BQ events. This is your opportunity to offer suggestions that might help make these events even better than they are now. Let’s get involved folks and have some fun!

The IMS show in Long Beach has been scheduled for December 9’th, 10’th and 11’th this year. More information can be found at http://www.motorcycleshows.com/longbeach . This information has also been sent out to all members via the e-mail distribution list. Check your inboxes.

STAR Chapter 460 is hosting an event at their supporting dealer Hutchin’s Motor Sports on October 8’th. They are planning a ride through the Joshua Tree National Park. See your inbox or the chapter’s calendar of events for the flyer and other information. I’ll be posting all of these events in the calendar today.

After much discussion with most of the chapter membership, it has been agreed that the chapter web server will be dismantled and rebuilt from scratch. Unfortunately this action is necessary because of the age of the software upon which it runs. The operating system of the server and the content management software of the site is no longer supported but contains several security flaws. We will unfortunately lose all previous data and user accounts as there is no support for any sort of migration to a new system. This means that all members will need to re-register with new site once it’s up and running. This will however allow us to provide new and better services to the members and hopefully the end result will be much easier to use for all.

This month’s ride destination was The Hideout near Lake Henshaw. The chapter departed from Motoworld at 10:00 AM heading out Old Highway 80 to Pine Valley. We proceeded up through the mountains via the Sunrise Highway and on into Julian, down into Santa Isabel to our final destination. It was nice leisurely ride that everyone seemed to enjoy.

Next month’s chapter ride destination will be announced soon. Keep your eyes on your e-mail.
